The House Has a Heat Pump — But Where Did the Oil Tank Go?
A newer heat pump is usually something buyers are happy to see. But when I'm looking at an older Victoria home, the new heating system can lead me to another question: What heated this house before the heat pump was installed?
In many older Greater Victoria homes, the answer may be oil.
And if a property was once heated with oil, I don't want my buyers to simply assume that the old oil tank was properly removed because the house now has electric heat or a modern heat pump.
I want to understand the history.
Why Would I Investigate an Oil Tank When the House Has a Heat Pump?
Because the heating system you see today doesn't necessarily tell you the heating history of the house.
Many older homes throughout Greater Victoria were originally heated with oil. Over the years, owners may have converted to natural gas, electric baseboards or, more recently, heat pumps.
The furnace may be gone. The oil lines may be gone. The house may have been renovated beautifully.
But I still want to know what happened to the tank.
